Why We’re Doing This
Sketches of the Soul was born from a deep desire to make our trans siblings seen, heard, and celebrated.
For too long, trans stories have been silenced, erased, or only told through trauma. This project reclaims the narrative. Through the intimate process of portraiture and storytelling, we honor the truth of trans lives—past and present—with compassion, dignity, and artistry.
As each portrait is created, our participants share more than just their image—they share their soul. Their words, their journeys, their resistance, and their dreams come alive in real time. These aren’t just stories. They’re living testaments to resilience, identity, and legacy.
We also carry with us the memories of trans ancestors—those who paved the way and those who were taken too soon. Their absence is felt, but through this project, their spirits are never forgotten. From Marsha P. Johnson to the unnamed, we sketch them into history with the reverence they deserve.
This is not just an art project. This is community. This is remembrance. This is resistance.
And most of all—this is love in every line.
